Sustainability: Life Cycle Consultation
JCT has launched a consultation to collect data, informed views and opinions from property professionals, the supply chain and other stakeholders on life cycle matters within the context of sustainability and construction contracts. The purpose is to provide a focus for sustainability to improve performance and to help deliver the Government’s Strategy for Sustainable Construction.
Background
There is currently a legislative trend towards promoting a lower carbon economy with measures such as the carbon reduction commitment, feed-in tariffs and green deal. there is also concern over increasing energy prices, particularly in the longer term.
Certain employers are already the long-term occupier of the buildings they procure and so have an interest in their performance, not merely their construction or refurbishment. In addition evidence suggests that institutional investors, tenants and others are increasingly interested in the performance of buildings.
However at present the property and building industries are arguably fragmented. Employers often separate development teams from asset management teams, whilst contractors are appointed separately to facilities managers.
The consultation will close on 17 April 2012.
