CONTRACTORS LEGAL GROUP JOINS JCT

The new Contractors Legal Group (CLG), which represents the common interests of main contractor trade associations, has joined the Joint Contracts Tribunal (JCT).

Established last year, CLG provides representation to contractors on contractual and legal matters.  The trade associations working in partnership with CLG include the National Federation of Builders (NFB), Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA), the Scottish Building Federation (SBF) and the UK Contractors Group (UKCG).

As a member of the JCT, CLG joins the British Property Federation, Local Government Association, National Specialist Contractors Council, Royal Institute of British Architects, The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Scottish Building Contract Committee.

JCT is structured into a series of 'colleges', with each having a number of seats on the JCT council. Each college represents a sector of the industry with the employers' college, comprised of private sector clients and local authorities, being the biggest with 18 of the 47 council seats. The consultants, contractors and specialist sub-contractors colleges have nine seats each, and the Scottish building industry have two seats.

Professor Peter Hibberd, JCT chairman, said: "JCT's broad membership of industry bodies is further strengthened by the CLG becoming a member.

"As the industry's only consensual contract drafting body, we strive to secure a broad consensus before publishing or revising our standard forms of contract, ensuring that through better understanding and rigorous scrutiny the potential for conflict and dispute is minimised."

John Bradley, partner at law firm Reynolds Colman Bradley LLP and director of CLG, said: "It is important for contractors to be well represented at JCT and the CLG relishes that challenge and looks forward to working with the other industry bodies which currently make up JCT's membership.

"JCT as the biggest producer of standard form building contracts is particularly important to contractors, not least as JCT's contracts are the most commonly used in the construction industry.  Accordingly, the CLG together with its partners NFB, CECA, SBF and UKCG are keen to continue the excellent work previously undertaken by the Construction Confederation in representing main contractors and ensuring that JCT contracts continue to strike a fair balance between the parties who use them."
